Grade 8 Mishkan Project – Rabbinics

Hello Grade 8 students and families. We have been learning about the laws of Shabbat in Rabbinics class. We have learned how the restrictions on Shabbat come from the 39 actions used to build and transport the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in the desert. We will now be working on a project to reflect our learning on Shabbat. For this project, students will work in small groups to create a model mishkan, as well as exploring sources from the Torah and Mishnah about Shabbat. Models can be created with a physical model or with a 3D model created online.

At the link below, is the description of the project, including a rubric for success and links to important information.

The project is due on Monday, March 10. Students will begin presenting their project on that day to the class. We will then create a display for other students to come visit.

Az Yashir

Hello Middle School students and families. This is the newest part that we are adding to the traditional minyan in the morning. This is taken directly from the Torah and is the song that B’nei Yisrael sang, after crossing the Reed Sea, after the waters closed on the Egyptians. It can be found on page 38 of the blue siddurim. Because it’s from the Torah, it is traditional to chant it in the nussach (melody) that we read from the Torah. There are 3 sections where it does not follow the traditional nussach, and has a special song melody instead.

Students that are able to identify those three different parts by Friday, Jan 17, will receive a bonus in Rabbinics class. Also, the first three students that are able to sing this independently, will also receive a bonus of 1% on their next report card.

Here is a link to a Google sheet with the words to Az Yashir. The Hebrew words include the trope from the Torah, which I will be teaching later in the year. It also includes the entire Tefillah in transliterated Hebrew for those that require it.

Baruch She’amar and Yishtabach

These two tunes are a part of the daily tefillah each morning for Middle School. We are slowly teaching the Middle School students these new tunes for these two tefillot and it would be helpful for them to listen to them at home to get to know them better. The words and recordings are attached.

D’var Torah Schedule for Grades 6-8

Below is the link to see which week each student is responsible for doing a D’var Torah on the weekly Torah portion.
Students are responsible for giving a short summary of the content of the Parsha, as well as elaborating on something we can learn from the Parsha. I have included helpful links below that will provide you with all of this information for each Parsha.
