Grade 8: Escape from Sobibor Assignment

This week we are shifting our focus in Jewish Studies to various resistance attempts that were made by both Jews and gentiles during the Holocaust. Students will be watching and analyzing the film, Escape from Sobibor. This film depicts the largest escape from an extermination camp during the Holocaust. For those students who are away please watch the film and answer the critical thinking questions. These questions can be answered after the film has completed.

Please skip the scene at 45:40. This scene contains graphic content and will be skipped in class as well.

Grades 6-8: Jewish Studies 2/12 Shabbat Table Discussion

Today in Jewish Studies, we will look at various sources/ideas regarding peer pressure. This content connects to each course in its own way. I have highlighted the five questions that each group should complete on the attached document.

In an effort to save time and promote discussion, I prefer that this activity be complete in groups of 3-4 students. You will only need to submit one answer sheet per group.

Grade 8: Monday’s Task (Reflect Upon A Survivor’s Story)

Today students will read and reflect upon the story of a Holocaust Survivor. The website  http://holocaustlearning.org/survivors provides students with various personal narratives of survivors.

Directions: Students will choose a survivor’s narrative to read. After reading their story, students will answer the following reflection questions. Answer the questions in complete sentences.

  1. What feelings did this narrative elicit? (Explain the thoughts or emotions you felt while reading this story)
  2. How could you connect any of the experiences you read about to your own life? Did you feel any connection to the narrator?
  3. What lessons can you learn from this narrative?
  4. How could you use this story to educate others?
  5. What part of the story did you find most intriguing? Why?

*Students are encouraged to read multiple stories in order to determine which narrative speaks to them personally*

It’s Important To Be Knowledgeable About A Topic Prior To Speaking

Yesterday the Shinshinim came to our classes to teach students in Grade 7 and 8 about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict narrative. Liam and Inbar emphasized the importance of understanding and learning all that you can about a topic before you try to explain it someone else. In the activity shown below, students were given a topic and then asked to speak about that topic for two minutes straight without stopping.

Upon completion of this activity students were shown a Crash Course History video about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

Liam and Inbar did a fantastic job explaining a common misconception that the conflict revolves around religion. In reality, the conflict stems from a land dispute. The land in which Israel sits upon was promised to multiple parties by the British. The Shinshinim used various maps and graphics to show how the borders of Israel have changed depending on the year/moment in history. We look forward to our next session!

Dear Parents and Students ,

If you have any gently used toys, small gifts, “chachkas” or anything that you think a child would enjoy to choose as a prize, please send in your items to your child’s homeroom teacher. We thank you for your support and help in making this year’s Purim festival the best ever!

Grade 8: Holocaust WebQuest Extension (Due Monday 1/14)

Students have been hard at work this past week in an attempt to finish their Holocaust WebQuest. As many students have chosen to dive deep and provide extensive details for each question, I have decided to extend the due date for this assignment.

The Holocaust WebQuest will be due when students arrive to class on Monday 1/14. Keep up the hard work!
