A reminder for the students who are creating the Mishkan during T’filah – please remember to bring a shoe box.
Grade 6 core Hebrew – Reading Week homework
Shalom grade 6,
Here is the homework you need to do for Reading Week – in case that you have not finished the following activity in class.
Enjoy listening to this song, which is about all the things children need to do…
Have a good vacation,
Gonen
1. Listen to the Hebrew children’s song: הצריך הזה “This ‘needing-to'”.
2. Use the song lyrics on the next page to locate all the שמות פועל – names of verbs – in the song.
If needed, use the dictionary.
3. The song ends with the words:
ומרוב שהצטרכתי –
כבר שכחתי
מה אני רוצה.
And due to “needing to” so much –
I forgot
What do I want.
In one or two sentences, please answer: what is the song about?
Shalom everyone!
We are learning Hebrew core in two main ways at the moment.
The baseline is that we learn about the foundations of Hebrew linguistics such as: verbs conjugation, basic Hebrew building blocks like male/female words, singular/plural, and so fourth.
We do that by following the text books – in all three classes – and having additional tailored assignments for each class.
In grade 7 & 8 we further the learning by personal projects. Each class is working on a particular project. The students incorporate their earlier learning of this year into the project.
Updates, assignments, reflections and tastes of class actions will be posted soon.
Stay warm and safe,
Gonen
Grades 6-8: Jewish Studies 2/12 Shabbat Table Discussion
Today in Jewish Studies, we will look at various sources/ideas regarding peer pressure. This content connects to each course in its own way. I have highlighted the five questions that each group should complete on the attached document.
In an effort to save time and promote discussion, I prefer that this activity be complete in groups of 3-4 students. You will only need to submit one answer sheet per group.
Grade 6: The Centrality of Mitzvot Assignment (Due: Monday)
Attached you will find the source analysis that we have been working on this week in class. Please remember that this assignment is due when you arrive to class on Monday. Have a great weekend.
Grade 8: Canada’s Former Determination to Keep Jews Out
This week we learned about the horrific narrative of the MS St. Louis. We watched an incredible documentary that provided our class with testimonies from historians and survivors who experienced this infamous event firsthand. Students are being asked to read and respond to the article attached below. Due to exams, this assignment will be completed in class (not for homework).
End of Year Hebrew Exam Prep – Grade 8
The Grade 8’s have already started to prepare for their Hebrew exam. In class, we have begun reviewing the material that we have previously learned. The following is the booklet that I prepared for them to practice:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1k0ddfU4I1_liOAmKzvMVqWNs2BfM5u7M8ziD1XIiDEU/edit#slide=id.p
Please look through the material, and if you have any questions, you are encouraged to ask in class or email me.

Grade 6: Exploring Marital Harmony
Over the next few days we will continue to explore and discuss various elements of a successful relationship. Today we had the pleasure of being joined with Rabbi Finkelstein during our discussion. Tomorrow we will re-read the text below and answer the questions.
Grade 8: Monday’s Task (Reflect Upon A Survivor’s Story)
Today students will read and reflect upon the story of a Holocaust Survivor. The website http://holocaustlearning.org/survivors provides students with various personal narratives of survivors.
Directions: Students will choose a survivor’s narrative to read. After reading their story, students will answer the following reflection questions. Answer the questions in complete sentences.
- What feelings did this narrative elicit? (Explain the thoughts or emotions you felt while reading this story)
- How could you connect any of the experiences you read about to your own life? Did you feel any connection to the narrator?
- What lessons can you learn from this narrative?
- How could you use this story to educate others?
- What part of the story did you find most intriguing? Why?
*Students are encouraged to read multiple stories in order to determine which narrative speaks to them personally*
Grade 7: Task for Monday (Let’s Get Ready for Legomania)
The past week students have been preparing various Lego related challenges for our next Mitzvah Project activity with TIPES. Today students are being tasked with creating invitations for the TIPES students.
Task: Each student is responsible for creating a minimum of one invitation for a TIPES student. The invitations should be colorful, creative, and exciting. Our goal is to get the students excited for our next activity together.
- Example of a way to start: Dear Lego Master,
- Message should be encouraging (mention how much fun we had during our last activity)
- Give brief explanation of Lego challenges
- Draw pictures
Students may use materials from the closet (markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc.) to design their invitation.
