WEEK IN REVIEW – BY JESSICA AGES
//This week, we started off on Monday by visiting our friends in Hillel Lodge. We were able to tour their rooms and hear about their fascinating backgrounds. Prior to our visit, we learned all about the characteristics of a good friend and the elements of a strong friendship. This allowed us to strengthen our own relationships with the Hillel Lodge residents!
Throughout this week, the grade 8 students will also be preparing for our debate. We will be looking through texts and doing online research in order to collect information. The topic of our debate is modesty. Mr. Washerstein’s class, we are learning the skills on how to present a debate. In Dr. Marcovitz’s class, we will be researching in the Talmud, as well as relating biblical times to the present! The lessons from both classes will allow us to have a successful debate!
Being the oldest grade at OJCS, it is important for us to take on responsibilities set an example for the younger grades. We have started the shabbat bulletin where we can teach our younger peers! Every Friday, we will be creating a summary of the parashah, along with fun facts for Kindergarten through Grade 5! Our shabbat bulletin is called Shabbat Sheva. The Hebrew word “sheva” means seven. We choose the title Shabbat Sheva because shabbat is on the seventh day of the week. Additionally, the students should take 7 minutes to learn with their parents.
I’m excited to take on more leadership roles throughout the year!

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, GRADE 7
//I want the students to practice using a new tool that I will be using at different points throughout the year. They will need headphones and their device for this task. You can give out iPads if they do not have their own device. They will need to do this completely on their own. I have made a video of our first lesson. Throughout the video, it will pause and ask them to answer some questions. They do not need to worry about getting something wrong, they can always pause and go back to rewatch something if they need, and they must watch the whole video and answer all the questions. If anyone doesn’t have headphones, you can spread them out in different areas in the hallway so they can listen without being disturbed by others.

If you have not already turned in your assignment, please make sure you send it to me by the end of the day Friday to receive full credit.

Please open the word file. Choose 7points (there is a total of 14). Write the 7 points in your own words. Choose interesting points which you can share with your family. I suggest make it colorful and add pictures. Create a friendly fun format.
Part 2A
Look at the 2 PDFs. There are 9 symbols. Choose 5 symbols and write them in your own words. For example Beets: The Hebrew word for Beets is Silka which sounds like the word ‘lisaleik’ which means remove. On this Rosh Hashanah may God remove our enemies.
Please remember to add pictures of the symbols and use fun fonts.
Part 2 B
Create 3 of Your own symbols: For example Peaches. Peaches are sweet: May God provide a peachy year.

Grade 6 – Week in Review
//On Monday the student recited the “order” of the brachot. They needed to explain why certain brachot are recited on which foods. During the middle and end of the week, part of grade 6 was learning the Jewish customs and Traditions about Rosh Hashana. The other half of the grade was preparing a play to perform to the Kindergarten on Monday about Rosh Hashana.
